10 Common English Mistakes Marathi Speakers Make — and How to Fix Them

1Grammar

When we think in Marathi and speak in English, our brain translates word by word. That habit creates small but noticeable mistakes. The good news? Once you know them, they are easy to fix.

1. "I am agree"

  • ❌ I am agree with you.
  • ✅ I agree with you.

Agree is already a verb. Don't add am.

2. "Myself Rahul"

  • ❌ Myself Rahul, from Shikrapur.
  • ✅ I am Rahul / My name is Rahul.

"Myself" is used only for emphasis or reflexive actions — I did it myself.

3. "He don't know"

  • ❌ He don't know the answer.
  • ✅ He doesn't know the answer.

With he, she, it — use does / doesn't.

4. "Discuss about"

  • ❌ Let's discuss about the project.
  • ✅ Let's discuss the project.

5. "Today morning"

  • ❌ I went there today morning.
  • ✅ I went there this morning.

Similarly: this evening, last night, yesterday morning.

6. "Return back" and "Repeat again"

  • ❌ Please return back the book. / Repeat it again.
  • ✅ Please return the book. / Please repeat it.

Return already means give back.

7. "I have seen him yesterday"

  • ❌ I have seen him yesterday.
  • ✅ I saw him yesterday.

When you mention a finished time (yesterday, last week), use simple past.

8. "Cousin brother / cousin sister"

  • ✅ Just say my cousin. If needed: my cousin, she…

9. "What is your good name?"

  • ✅ May I know your name? or simply What's your name?

10. "I am having two brothers"

  • ❌ I am having two brothers.
  • ✅ I have two brothers.

Possession verbs (have, know, like, want) usually don't take -ing.
